So here we go, another album review! This time we take a look Nerdcore Rapper Richie Branson’s From Guardia With Love. Now, I’m not an expert on the genre of hip-hop/rap, but this album has caught my attention greatly for reasons I can relate to for once but not just that Richie uses the music of a game I haven’t touched in such a long time, Chrono Trigger, but also that he uses it in a way I couldn’t even imagine.
Let’s get into it. “Into Antiquity” (which uses the game’s song “Corridors of Time”), is pretty much becoming my favorite song off this album not just because of the amazing beats or renditions of the nostalgic song, but his message. It’s not all about reminiscing about a SNES game from way back when and it becomes prevalent in the second track, “Radical Dreams” where he’s portraying a story; a journey he’s taking to the future and you’re a part of it just as when, if you played these RPGs and you took the role of the main character, you wanted it to be you just to take this adventure. The reason you can most likely relate to it is because he heads to the future in the second track and wonders “what the hell happen to the world of this hip-hop genre where almost everything popular sounds like the same rehash soulless nonsense.” But this future is right now for us and how we need to change a mindset of what it is now but to look back to the past to re forge the present and hope for the future which he explains in his third track “Time Machine.”
Now, I’m not going to do a breakdown of the whole album but you can get a general idea that its real-world meets fantasy world and Richie borrows a lot of the magic from the realm of Chrono in his verses and it’s just great to me that it’s a double dose of old hip-hop and a great game from a time when I was growing up. That’s not all, as every dime and penny earned from this album goes right to charity! Yeah you heard me, his hard work in providing people with quality entertainment and the money he makes? He’s giving it to charity, specifically the Extra Life organization that works with the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. How freaking amazing is that? You get a great album with awesome tracks and a good feel not just from the music but also helping out with charity! My verdict for this album – 4 out of 5 Metal Arks.
